“Memory Stick”
“Memory Stick” is a portable and compact Integrated Circuit recording medium. There are two types of
“Memory Stick”: “MagicGate Memory Stick” equipped with “MagicGate” copyright protection
technology and a normal “Memory Stick” not equipped with the copyright protection technology. You
can record image files, audio files, and sound files using “Memory Stick” compatible audio visual
devices, or record data from the computer. Data with different formats can be stored in the same
“Memory Stick.” (Please refer to the instruction manuals that come with the devices to check which
format the equipment is able to read.)
For example, you can store image files in the space available on “MagicGate Memory Stick” using the
respective equipment even if there are already audio files in “MagicGate Memory Stick.”
Move-In/Move-Out
To Move-In/Out a song means to transfer all information related to audio files (song data, copyright
information, additional information, etc.) between your unit and “MagicGate” Memory Stick (MG
Memory Stick). For example, the songs downloaded from an EMD (Electronic Music Distribution)
service can be imported directly to the “MG Memory Stick,” then moved to your unit.
Compared to “Check-In/Check-Out,” in which songs are transferred within the range of usage
conditions determined by copyright information, “Move-In/Move-Out” allows you to transfer all
information attached to the songs between the source and target devices. The song information does not
remain on the source device after the move is completed.
The only songs that can be moved between your unit and the “MG Memory Stick” are those that are
permitted to be moved by copyright information. Also, you cannot Move-In/Out songs between a unit
and an external device/medium unless the external device/medium is compatible with the “MG Memory
Stick.”
OpenMG
Copyright protection technology to import and manage contents of music distribution services or CDs.
By using software compliant with OpenMG, audio contents can be encrypted before storage on a hard
disc drive so that you can enjoy playback of the audio files on that unit. OpenMG also prevents
unauthorized distribution of the contents via the Internet or other networks.
This copyright protection complies with “MagicGate,” and allows you to transfer digital music content
to a compliant device.
SDMI
SDMI which stands for Secure Digital Music Initiative, is a forum that consists of over 130 companies
in the fields of recorded audio content, computers, and consumer electronics, dedicated to developing
an integrated method of copyright protection technology that can be used worldwide.
SDMI is working to create a framework for preventing improper usage of audio files and to promote
legal music distribution services. The copyright protection technologies “OpenMG” and “MagicGate”
are based upon the SDMI standard.
