LPCM
Linear PCM is a method of digital audio storage typically used with CD Audio. This format is sometimes
used on DVD discs - at a higher resolution than CD - for stereo soundtracks.
MacroVision
Analog Copy Protection which scrambles video signal when used with VHS recorders. Also has an effect on
some projectors and monitors.
MP3
A compressed audio format. Its small size makes it popular for downloading on internet. MP3 files recorded on
CD-R or CD-RW media are suitable for playback on your DVD Player.
NTSC
National Television System Committee. This is the standard system for TV in the USA and Japan, among others.
PAL
Video standard used in most European countries and elsewhere.
Progressive Scan
Scans all horizontal lines of a monitor or TV display in one pass, as opposed to Interlaced, which scans only odd
or even lines with each pass.
Region Code
DVD movies are produced with region encoding to restrict distribution of titles to certain areas at certain times.
To play back a DVD title with a specific region code, you will need a DVD player with the same region code.
S-Video
S-Video offers significantly improved video signal performance over a basic composite video connection. To use
this type of connection, your TV must have an S-Video input.
VCD
Digital Video Disc. A digital video disc format particularly popular in Asia. Uses MPEG-1 video compression. The
picture quality is roughly that of VHS tapes.
