set Radio buttons...

how do you set the radio for the individual buttons 1-6 I pressed the tuner/set and it will not set. I believe at one time I was albe to set it but I forgot now and its set on stations that is nothing but static? what is the sleep icon on the screen with volumes above it what is that for? thank you
