I'm unable to get this to work, unable to get my c...

I'm unable to get this to work, unable to get my computer to acknowledge it (probably since I can't turn it on) and I need to get the songs that are on it. Is it possible? Is there some sort of chip on the inside? Or is this like a flash drive and there's no way to get the songs unless the computer acknowledges it?
