Well, I tried resetting as suggested by the manual and others and it did not work, so I decided to call COBY directly.
They indicated to hook it up to the computer and format the unit.
You do that by finding the unit in my computer, and right clicking. One of the options is to format. It wipes out the stuff downloaded on the unit and you need to copy back your files.
I actually found it easier to locate the MP3 Player via windows explorer, clicked to expand it, then right clicked on the MP3 removable drive to get the format command.
The technician indicated it should fix it, but if not, take it back to the retailer for an exchange (it was a Christmas gift).
Hope that helps everyone else, as I came across others with the same error during my search
