Symphonic Portable DVD Player VP-19 WF

I got it at the thrift store without a owner's manual . I was hoping for a lil' help . The small monitor won't come on , even though the VCR player seems to be running . It accepts "AA" batteries . Do they have to be in if you're using house current ? That ring a bell with anyone ? Thanx for your help , R .
